Be Proactive to Avoid Legal Liability - for Yourself and Your Government Entity

Officers lose cases over the same mistakes every year: violating curtilage or writing a report that says what you did but not why. This hour covers where the law is moving, the mistakes that keep coming up, and three rules for handling close calls.

Instructor:

Anthony Bandiero is a police officer turned attorney who has dedicated his career to making constitutional law practical for law enforcement. He is the founder of Blue to Gold, one of the nation's leading providers of legal training for law enforcement, serving more than 7,000 agencies, and the author of publications such as the Search and Seizure Survival Guide series. He also serves as a search and seizure consultant and expert witness.

Known for his high-energy, practical teaching style and real-world scenarios, Anthony helps officers apply constitutional law with confidence.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Where the Law Is Moving: Recent decisions that change how you work a stop, approach a house, or use technology.
  • Curtilage and the Approach: Where you can walk, where you can look, and when a knock-and-talk becomes a search.
  • Reports That Hold Up: Courts don't suppress what you did. They suppress what you failed to explain.
  • Three Rules for Close Calls: How to handle a gray area so the decision that comes out of it helps other officers instead of hurting them.

Continuing Education:

This session meets the statutory criteria for annual training hours under Neb. Rev. Stat. 81-1414.07 and the Nebraska Public Service Commission, as applicable, for up to 1.0 hours. NIRMA will email a certificate of attendance to verified attendees.
